Full description from organizer

Join the River Basin Management Service in the Bernal Institute in UL for a day of citizen science discussion and hands-on activities. Members of the public are being invited to take part in a free, practical Citizen Science Water Quality Monitoring event at the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick, on Saturday 19th September from 9:30am-2:00pm. The event is aimed at anyone with an interest in their local rivers, streams, lakes and other waterbodies, including Tidy Towns groups, anglers, farmers, environmental and biodiversity groups, community organisations, and interested members of the public. Organised by the River Basin Management Service, the event will introduce participants to citizen science and demonstrate how members of the public and community groups can play an active role in monitoring the health of local waterbodies. Participants will learn about a simple kick-sampling method for investigating the small aquatic creatures that live in rivers and streams. They will also be introduced to the River Basin Management Service's CSSI App, which allows participants to record their findings and contribute information on waterbodies that may not otherwise be routinely monitored. The event will combine presentations, discussion and hands-on activities. Participants will have the opportunity to: • Learn how citizen science can help us understand the health of local rivers and streams. • Hear about the experiences of citizen science groups and community organisations. • Learn how the CSSI app can be used to record water quality information. • Take part in a practical kick-sampling demonstration. • Meet and network with other people and organisations interested in protecting and improving local waterways. This is a regional event and we welcome all groups from Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick. Refreshments and lunch will be provided but booking is necessary to confirm numbers.
