Let's Talk About the Elephant in the Room

Build understanding of domestic and family violence, including how it can present in everyday life & the signs that may indicate abuse Join us as we host Elly the Elephant, a powerful community art installation designed to spark conversations about domestic and family violence. The session will also explore: • How we can respond safely and supportively to someone experiencing or impacted by violence • Support services and pathways available to women • How we can better recognise opportunities to provide information and connect people with appropriate support • The importance of creating safe, inclusive and supportive community spaces Email: [email protected] Elly the Elephant Elly the Elephant was commissioned by WSSSA from the local Adelaide Artist, Warren Pickering, who runs A Small Art Factory with his family in McLaren Vale. Once Elly was created, she was painted by women with lived-experience of domestic and family violence through a series of Art Therapy Focus Groups led by the artist and life coach, Carol Omer. During these sessions, the women generously shared their experiences of seeking support for domestic violence, exploring what they found helpful, what could have been improved, what made seeking support difficult and what support might have looked like for them if they were able to access it earlier. This information will be used to inform future service delivery, ensuring that women’s voices are listened to in service design and adaptation.
