Learn to deliver author talks and workshops that will leave schools raving about you. School visits can be among the most rewarding experiences for authors – and the most daunting. Standing in front of a room full of young people and talking about your book isn’t necessarily enough to capture their attention. Instead, give them a reason to care by creating an experience they’ll remember long after you’ve left. Join Carla Salmon, a Highly Accomplished Lead Teacher (HALT) at Brisbane Grammar School and Young Adult author, as she shares evidence-based teaching strategies to help authors shift their planning from what students will see and hear to what they will do, think and create. Learning outcomes As part of this workshop, you will learn: • What makes your school visit worth attending – identifying your unique point of difference • How to create an attention-grabbing hook that sets expectations • How to use your own writing and expertise to create memorable learning experiences • How to design activities that make student learning visible and transferable • Practical tips for communicating with event organisers, using technology purposefully, creating reusable resources and managing behaviour positively Format This is an in-person workshop with a focus on author sustainability; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for emerging and established writers of all genres and backgrounds. About Carla Carla Salmon is a teacher and marketing professional who loves telling stories. Her debut young adult novel We Saw What You Started was shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers and the Sisters in Crime Davitt Award for Young Adult fiction. We Did It Anyway is the second book in Carla's series of thrilling standalone mysteries inspired by her country coastal childhood where sports ruled and beach campsites were paradise. Much like the students in her classroom today, her characters lead action-packed lives with plenty of heart and humour.
