In the age of AI, Financial crime typologies are changing faster than the controls built to detect them. Artificial intelligence has lowered the cost of deception and lifted the volume of scam and laundering activity reaching Australian institutions. At the same time, the AML/CTF reforms have widened the regime and brought new obligations for existing and incoming reporting entities. The Scams Prevention Framework will impose further duties on banks and their counterparts. The Economic Crime Risk Symposium gives regulators, law enforcement, industry and academia a day to exchange views and hear from experts in the field. Why Attend ? Economic crime risk in the Pacific. Deputy Commissioner Hilda Sirec APM, who leads National Security Investigations at the AFP, opens the symposium on the widening overlap between organised crime and national security in the region. A special session dedicated to Proliferation financing typologies are covered separately by Dr Shaun Mawdsley of the NZ Financial Intelligence Unit. TD Bank: what went wrong and what it costs. Special Agent Carlo Nastasi of IRS Criminal Investigation was co-lead agent on the TD Bank matter, the largest Bank Secrecy Act case brought in the United States and the first in which a bank pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money. He will take the audience through how the program failures were identified, how the investigation was built, and what supervisors and financial crime teams elsewhere should take from it. Insider threat in AI-enabled finance. The financial sector has spent thirty years building digital services and, alongside them, the capability to resist fraud and financial crime. AI has opened new ground on both sides. It creates opportunities in the business and new routes for threats against it, including from people who already hold legitimate access. Drawing on his own operational experience and on his book Insider Threat: A Systemic Approach, Pierre Skorich sets out how treating insider risk as a system improves prevention, sharpens detection and limits the damage when something does go wrong. The session closes on what that means for the guardrails organisations are now putting around emerging AI tools. Where the regulatory settings are heading. David Shannon has led 24 mutual evaluations for the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering and will set out how assessments are running across the region, what assessors are finding, and how the effectiveness methodology is being applied in practice. Sessions on AML/CTF reform and the Scams Prevention Framework will also be featured. Also on the program The program also features leading academics discussing their research on financial crime, as well as senior leaders from CBA, Westpac and NAB.
