About this event
THE LONG RUN: WRITING A FANTASY SERIES How do you, as the writer, comprehend the incomprehensible...? DATE: 12:30PM - 15th November 2026 VENUE: Lost Souls, Netherworld @ Fortitude Valley SUMMARY: Hark, Adventurers! Join author Gabrielle Davis on the last leg of her trilogy journey for a lesson in writing a series. If you're thinking of setting yourself up for a long-term writing project, check in for some practical guidance on how to start, keeping momentum, and finding the finish line. Gabrielle will talk through the elements of a series: from worldbuilding, to characters, to story arcs, and share her practical tips on how she brings (multiple) manuscripts from page one to done! All are welcome! BIO: Gabrielle knows what it feels like to be trapped. Once a burnt-out lawyer working in a corporate “sky prison,” she spent years climbing the ladder until her debut fantasy manuscript was described as “the best fantasy manuscript I’ve read in years.” Now, instead of drafting contracts, she crafts immersive worlds filled with complex characters, dangerous politics, and a unique system of shadow magic. Through both her stories and her outreach, Gabrielle inspires others to change their own fate, sharing her journey through workshops, school visits, and seminars designed to help new voices rise. For her, writing is more than storytelling. It is about empowerment, self-discovery, and the courage to choose a different future. Her debut novel, Road to Freedom (Hawkeye Publishing, 2024), follows Issanka the Unnamed, a casteless girl with the power to manipulate light and sound, as she uncovers dangerous truths in a city on the brink of civil war. Set in a fantasy world inspired by historical France, the story blends YA adventure with reflections on inequality, power, and democracy. Road to Freedom was shortlisted twice for the Hawkeye Publishing Manuscript Development Prize. Its sequel, Pirates and Courtiers, was released in February 2026. SKILL LEVEL: If you are a first-time writer, a long-time writer, or somewhere in between, you are welcome! Authors & Adventure is designed for LGBTQIASB+ and neurodivergent writers seeking affirming experiences outside of cisgender heteronormative spaces. Our workshops are convened and/or coordinated by queer-affirming and neurodivergent-affirming service providers.
