Global Food Security and Ukraine: Past and Present

This event will focus on global food security in relation to Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. As the Ukrainian community in Australia commemorates the Holodomor, the 1932–1933 famine in Ukraine, around the third Saturday of November, the event will connect this historical experience with current threats to Ukraine’s agriculture and global food security. Invited speakers will address the broader geopolitical context of Russia’s current war against Ukraine, including the blockade and disruption of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, threats to Ukrainian agriculture, and their consequences for global food security. Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia and New Zealand. • Dr Iryna Skubii, the inaugural Mykola Zerov Fellow in Ukrainian Studies, University of Melbourne. • Prof. Mark Edele, Hansen Professor in History, Co-Director of the Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space, University of Melbourne. • Jarema Polatajko, Co-Founder and Director, Future Ukraine Limited.
