Content Making a small wooden puzzle. This program is about learning interlocking joinery. And providing a introduction to skills in "marking-out" and Japanese saw and chisel hand tools. Well suited for beginners. What is "Kumiki"? Kumiki describes the Japanese woodworking technique of connecting and interlocking wooden pieces (in the absence of glue and nails) to produce a strong, aesthetically pleasing and curiosity creating new piece. Its ability to accommodate the continual fluctuations in wood size through the seasons gives it broad applications. It is applied extensively from the grandeur of Japanese Temples and Castles to small toys and puzzles. What you can gain 1. Make a simple wooden puzzle to take home 2. Exposure to Japanese hand tools and techniques. What kind of work involved 1. Marking out 2. Japanese saw work 3. Paring with Japanese chisels 4. Finish sanding and oiling. Safety All the tools will be well instructed and operated under supervision. Dates (1 occasion) 26 September 2026 (Sat) Time 9:00-12:00 + 13:00-16:00, 6 hours * Please be flexible with your schedule after the class. Sometimes your project requires extra time to finish. Lecturer John Lane (KOITOYA Design/Make/Teach) After living in Japan for 4 years John returned to Australia in 2002 and began studying Woodwork at the Canberra School of Art. Upon graduation he worked for a couple of local businesses until he joined Koitoya in 2023. Fee $335 Class size Maximum 9 Location Koitoya Design/Make/Teach (Fyshwick, ACT) Address 4/18 Maryborough Street, Fyshwick ACT 2609 Parking Please park your car in the public parking area along Maryborough Street (Free), opposite J Racing. We have two parking spots officially. Please contact me for the spot if you need to walk less for a health condition. Way to the workshop 18 Maryborough Street is a battle axe block, located inside of the block, so you will be walking through the driveway that leads to the block from Maryborough Street. The driveway has 2 access points, one next to Aqua Safe Water Filters, and one next to J Racing. Unit 4 is a blue painted building on the right-hand side of the block. Things to bring Please wear working shoes. Bring your own water bottle and lunch.
