Full description from organizer

Free creative art sessions for young people aged 12–25 to explore, express, connect and create in a safe, supportive space. Safe Spaces is a series of free art therapy sessions for young people aged 12–25 to create, connect and explore what safety, comfort and belonging mean to them. The NT is lacking spaces created specifically for young people to feel safe, connected and free to be themselves. When those spaces don’t exist, young people often have to create safety for themselves. Whether thats in the places they go, the people they surround themselves with, and the communities they build. That’s what Safe Spaces is about: exploring what makes a space feel safe to you, and using creativity to imagine, express and create it. Each session explores a different creative medium, giving you the chance to experiment with new materials and ways of expressing yourself. You don’t need to be “good at art”, share anything personal or explain what you create. You choose how you participate. Led by a qualified art therapist with support from youth workers, the sessions are a chance to make art, meet people, slow down, make some controlled mess and explore what your safe space looks like. Session Titles - Nov 7th - Street Style Zine Manifesto (Create a protective billboard statement for your future self using paint and markers) Nov 14th - Altered Board Game Panels (Change the rules of the game by building your own "monopoly games" on canvas board) Nov 21st - Guardian of Safety (Crafting of your own safety guardians from felt and fabrics) Nov 28th - Where the Wild Things Are (Buiding sculpture of "wild things" based on difficult, heavy or complex emotions) Dec 5th - A Sacred Sanctuary (Create a textured haven from natural and/or personal objects from Darwin landscape) Dec 12th - A Diorama of Belonging (Create a diorama to build a physical representation of your personal sanctuary) Your art could become part of something bigger You can choose to put forward something you create for the Safe Spaces Youth Art Zine — showcasing what safety and safe spaces look like to young people across the NT. If your artwork is included, you can choose to be named, use a different name or remain anonymous, and you'll receive a $20 Visa Prezzy Card as a thank you for contributing (limit one per person). Submitting your work is completely optional. Your art is yours. Come to one session or come to them all. Each week is different, and the space is yours to help shape.
