An invitation to explore core Buddhist principles and a way to relate differently to your own experience, with like-minded travellers. All levels of experience are welcome. The essence of Buddhist thought and practice is beautifully laid out in a practical and accessible way in “Stages of the Path to Enlightenment” – in Tibetan, “Lam Rim”. We will be exploring the Lam Rim which offers a series of ways and means to perceive the world. Grounding these teachings in your life will change your perception of the world. In doing that, your life may become more open and purposeful, with less struggle and you may find more compassion, love, understanding and tolerance for yourself and others. In Approaching the Buddhist Path, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso says: "…external improvements in our world are not sufficient to bring the happiness and peace that we all desire. For this, internal transformation through spiritual development is essential. For this transformation to occur, we need to follow a spiritual path. Spiritual practice involves transforming our mind. Although our body is important, satisfying it does not bring lasting happiness. We must look inside ourselves, examining our attitudes and emotions to understand how profoundly they influence and shape our experiences… …By subduing the afflicted aspects of our mind, our experience of the world is transformed, whereas if we seek to change only the external environment and the people in it, we continually meet with frustration and disappointment because we cannot control the external world. It is only by developing the great potential of our mind/heart that we will be able to find a way out of our suffering and to truly benefit others as well.” This year we are taking a fresh approach to exploring the Graduated Path to Enlightenment, with a focus on applying and integrating the teachings in daily life. Each week will include explanations of the topics, discussions and meditations. As in previous years, the sessions will be guided by senior students who have studied and practised Buddhist teachings for several decades. The Tuesday of each month will focus primarily on meditation. Meditation is a key method for developing a calm and clear mind and using this to deepen our understanding and wisdom.
