Northern soul is a music and dance culture that emerged in working class youth clubs in Northern England and the midlands in the early 1970s. It developed from the British mod scene and celebrates a particular style of fast, gritty and rare Black American soul music. Northern soul went underground in the 80s and 90s but was sustained and expanded by diehard dancers and prominent DJs discovering previously overlooked records. Today, in the UK and beyond, Northern Soul is experiencing a resurgence with flocks of young people searching for an alternative club night that prioritises the music and not the DJ.
