Corporate Volunteering: Sustainable Winter Growing, Seed Sorting & Worm Farming

Contribute to a more inclusive and educational farm environment while building your team’s understanding of sustainable food systems. We have three programs that rotate depending on the season. Take a look at the details of each program below. *Bookings are allocated on a first‑come, first‑served basis and may place your team in a mixed group alongside other likeminded organisations. Duration: 2.5-hours (can be extended upon request) Where: Brickworks Rooftop Farm, Burwood VIC Group size: 10–20 participants* Cost: $143 inc. GST per person Participants can take home a complimentary seedling plant to grow at home (valued at $25). Program 1) Sustainable Growing & Sign-making This session combines hands-on impact work with practical learning, as participants take part in a practical session on how to grow food in winter, including simple techniques for producing high-yield, nutrient-rich crops at home. Your team will also help create fun and engaging signage that supports community food literacy across the farm. Hands-on activities: • Developing garden bed systems that improve navigation and learning • Working in teams to solve real-world communication challenges • Designing and constructing durable, sustainable garden signage Learning outcomes: • Gain practical, transferable sustainability skills - Learn simple, high-yield techniques for growing nutrient-rich food in winter - knowledge your team can apply both at home and as part of broader sustainability thinking at work. • Improve community access to food-growing knowledge - Design and build durable, engaging signage that supports food literacy across the farm, and any urban environment, creating a lasting educational resource for the community long after your visit. • Build team collaboration through real-world problem solving - Work together to navigate practical communication and design challenges, strengthening team connection through shared purpose and hands-on achievement. Impact: • Create a lasting community benefit by improved access to food‑growing knowledge • Builds practical, transferable skills in sustainable practices • Strengthens team connection through purpose Program 2) Cultural Seed Sorting & Harvesting This session focuses on harvesting, cleaning, and packaging seeds grown on-site, many of which are culturally significant crops aligned with the communities we support. These seeds contribute to our free seed library and are distributed to food relief partners, enabling individuals to grow their own food. Hands-on activities: • Harvesting and cleaning seeds • Sorting and preparing seeds for storage • Packaging and labelling seed packets with growing instructions Learning Outcomes: • Understand community-led food security initiatives - Build insights into how seed saving and distribution supports self-sufficiency for vulnerable communities, and how it addresses long-term food security challenges. • Contribute to biodiversity and cultural preservation - Take part in the hands-on harvesting, cleaning, and packaging of a variety of culturally significant seeds, directly supporting the preservation of food knowledge and biodiversity within the communities you serve. • Strengthen team culture through shared purpose - Build stronger workplace relationships and employee engagement through a collaborative, purpose-driven experience that reinforces organisational values around wellbeing and social impact. Impact: • Supports community self-sufficiency • Preserves cultural food knowledge and biodiversity • Builds practical skills and awareness on long-term food security Program 3) Worm Farm Blitz: Building Healthy Soil Systems Support the foundation of sustainable food production and learn how worm farming systems build a healthy garden. Participants will learn how productive worm farms function, how to maintain them, and the vital role worm castings play in building nutrient-rich soil for growing your favourite fruit and vegetables. Worm castings are rich in beneficial bacteria and enzymes that strengthen plant health and contribute to nutrient-dense food production.
