Foundations of Primary Prevention of Gender-Based Violence - West Perth

We all want to feel safe at home, in our workplace and out in our community. We want to enjoy healthy and respectful relationships and have the freedom to make choices not constrained by our gender. We want our families and our communities to be free from violence and abuse. But while we regularly see and feel the devastating impacts of gender-based violence, too many people feel helpless to make change in the face of such an entrenched social issue. With the right support, there are things we can do to make Western Australia safer and fairer for the people who've been left out. Preventing Violence Together (PVT) invites you to learn the skills you need to be part of a movement to end gender-based violence by attending our upcoming Foundations of Primary Prevention of Gender-Based Violence workshop. Workshop Outcomes This workshop is based on Western Australia's framework for primary prevention of men's violence against women: Foundations for Change. It includes a range of interactive activities and resources. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: • Understand men's violence against women as a gendered issue and identify examples of forms of gender-based violence. • Understand the underlying causes of gender-based violence and identify examples of the gendered drivers in practice. • Understand the characteristics of a primary prevention approach and assess whether a proposed activity is primary prevention. • Identify how the gendered drivers are operating at different levels of the socio-ecological model. • Identify actions required at different levels of the socio-ecological model to prevent gender-based violence before it occurs. • Respond effectively to resistance and backlash. Workshop facilitators: Alicia Gibbs (She/They) - Manager, Preventing Violence Together Alicia Gibbs is a social worker committed to tackling the underlying drivers of inequality and gender-based violence. She manages Preventing Violence Together, an initiative of the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing and Stopping Family Violence focused on building the capacity of Western Australia's emerging primary prevention sector. Alicia led the development of WA's first primary prevention practice and workforce capability framework: Foundations for Change. She now supports individuals, communities and organisations to implement the framework and undertake evidence-informed primary prevention activities that contribute to a safer and fairer society for all. Ryan Corbould (He/Him) - Prevention Sector Development Officer, Preventing Violence Together Ryan Corbould is a human ecologist with a background in advocacy for survivors of sexual violence in Canada. He has supported survivors through the criminal justice system, been a healthy relationships educator, and developed trauma-informed response policies with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He is passionate about the role of men in ending violence against women and believes that men and masculinities play a key role in primary prevention strategies. Ryan wants men to be some of the strongest voices advocating for gender equality.
