SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW MORE NACA WORKSHOPS This four-session Portrait Painting Masterclass introduces students to the traditional classical realism methods used to construct and complete a finished portrait in oils. Artists will learn a structured painting process inspired by the traditional atelier methods Josh Wright studied during five years of classical training at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. MEMBER: $200 NON-MEMBER: $240 Dates: Tuesday 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd March 2027 Time: 9am to 12pm About the Course In this 12 hour (4 x 3 hours classes) working from a carefully selected photographic reference, students will create a life-sized portrait on an 18 × 24 inch canvas. Beginning with the initial block-in and grisaille underpainting, the course will guide students through establishing accurate proportions and anatomy, understanding value relationships, mixing naturalistic flesh tones, developing form through light and shadow, and refining the painting toward a finished portrait. What you will learn • Portrait construction and the initial block-in • Grisaille underpainting techniques • Proportion and facial anatomy • Understanding light, shadow, and value • Colour theory and flesh-tone mixing • Layering colour over a monochromatic underpainting • Oil painting and rendering techniques • Developing form and three-dimensionality • Refining edges, details, and likeness • Taking a portrait from the initial drawing through to completion The course is designed to give students not only a finished portrait, but a repeatable classical painting process they can continue applying to their own work.
