KrÅiK (Sweden)

KrÅiK (Sweden) roams the borderlands between traditional Sámi joik, jazz and improvisational music, with a sound that is both contemporary and rooted in indigenous heritage. Fresh off their Australian debut with Moorambilla Voices at the Sydney Opera House, KrÅiK brings an intimate set of original music to Church Street Studios. Opening for the trio, composer/pianist Elizabeth Jigalin creates a frozen landscape of field recordings inside a piano - inspired by time spent with Anna in Sweden earlier this year. KrÅiK’s Australian visit is supported by Moorambilla Voices, building on an ongoing international artistic and cultural exchange between Australia and Sweden, initially supported by Creative Australia. https://moorambilla.com/ About KrÅiK KrÅiK is a trio consisting of Anna Kråik (joik, drum), Jens Comén (saxophone, loops, percussion) and Jonas Ehnroth (guitar, loops, effects). The group roams the borderlands between traditional Sámi joik, jazz and improvisational music, with a sound that is both contemporary and rooted in indigenous heritage. At the heart of KrÅiK’s music is Anna’s joik, which can be raw, beautiful, tender and incredibly powerful. A voice with roots deeply intertwined with Sami culture. Around Anna’s joik, Jens and Jonas create open soundscapes with room for improvisation and playfulness. Together, the trio creates a responsive interplay characterised by an experimental approach where the music flows organically. Through the Sami storytelling tradition, the music reflects on questions of identity, nature, spirituality, social change and existence from both personal and universal perspectives.
