Beyond the MAT: From Postural Findings to Clinical Reasoning

Develop MAT assessment skills through hands-on practice, clinical reasoning and case discussions to guide seating, positioning and equipment Completing a MAT assessment is more than following a sequence of movements. The challenge is knowing what to assess, how body segments influence one another, what the findings may suggest and what should happen next. Through facilitator-led demonstrations, coached hands-on practice and applied case discussions, this workshop will support occupational therapists and physiotherapists to develop a more structured approach to MAT assessment and interpretation. Participants will explore pelvic, trunk and lower-limb relationships, distinguish objective findings from clinical interpretation, and consider how findings connect with function, comfort, health and participation. The workshop focuses on the clinical reasoning required after completing a MAT assessment, including deciding what further information, assessment or equipment trials may be required. This workshop is designed for clinicians with foundational experience in seating, positioning or postural assessment. A working knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and movement terminology is recommended. Key Learning Areas: By attending this workshop, participants will: • Apply a structured approach to MAT assessment and interpretation. • Analyse relationships between pelvic, trunk and lower-limb findings. • Distinguish objective findings from clinical interpretation and areas of uncertainty. • Use MAT findings to identify priorities for further assessment and equipment trialling, and communicate the rationale clearly. SPECIAL GUEST PRESENTER: The workshop will be led by Bianca Brady, Head of Clinical Education at APEX Mobility. Bianca is an Occupational Therapist with more than 15 years of experience across Australian health, rehabilitation and community settings. As Head of Clinical Education for APEX Mobility, she leads the development and delivery of clinician education in seating, wheeled mobility and assistive technology. Her background in physical and neurological rehabilitation informs a practical, person-centred approach that connects assessment findings with function, participation and real-world assistive technology use. Bianca has a particular interest in developing practical education that supports clinicians to structure and clearly articulate their own clinical reasoning. She is currently completing postgraduate study in health professions education and is committed to delivering clinically relevant learning that supports thoughtful and defensible assistive technology decision-making.
