From Global Goals to Binding Law

How do the UN's non-binding SDGs become binding EU law? A conversation with the UN, the Commission and Belgian diplomacy. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals are not legally binding. Yet they shape real policy, largely because the EU translates these voluntary commitments into enforceable law: the Climate Law, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the Nature Restoration Law and more. This event traces that pipeline from soft commitment to hard law in three steps: why the UN deliberately kept the SDGs non-binding, how the European Commission turns global ambition into binding legislation and how a member state like Belgium negotiates that legislation into existence. We bring together speakers from the UN, the European Commission and Belgian diplomacy to debate a bigger question: does making the SDGs binding make them easier to deliver, or simply more politically explosive?
