Tree Canada's National Tree Day Planting Event in Charlottetown

Tree Canada and the City of Charlottetown are excited to plant trees in honour of National Tree Day. Come celebrate with us! Tree Canada, in collaboration with the City of Charlottetown, is excited to celebrate National Tree Day (NTD), presented by BMO. National Tree Day connects local action to national impact—when Canadians participate across the country, we grow a movement that reflects who we are and the future we want to build. Join us to plant up to 200 trees and shrubs and connect with nature. Tree Canada experts and experienced volunteers will be on hand to support you and answer your questions. We’ll provide gloves and shovels—all you need to bring is your enthusiasm! How you'll be making an impact Volunteers will plant native tree and shrub species in recently cleared and tilled areas, as well as through underplanting in forested sections. These native plants will help replace invasive species that were removed by contractors prior to the event. Volunteers may also support ongoing invasive species removal, if desired and time permits. Activities will primarily involve identifying and carefully removing buckthorn, nightshade, and other invasive species commonly found in Charlottetown. These activities will help restore a riparian ecosystem that has experienced significant biodiversity loss due to development pressures and the spread of invasive species. Volunteers will make meaningful contributions to the restoration of a riparian buffer zone through the planting of a diverse mix of Wabanaki-Acadian native species. Dense planting arrangements will support rapid canopy regeneration in an area that has been heavily impacted by development and the effects of climate change. In addition to its ecological benefits, this project will help ensure equitable access to sustainable, functional green spaces across the City of Charlottetown. By supporting renewal efforts in a natural area located near a range of housing types, including student housing, the project will enhance access to nature and contribute to the health and well-being of local residents. Free Food: Volunteers can grab a snack, courtesy of Vachon. What to wear and bring: Volunteers should wear and bring the following: • Water bottle • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots • Long pants • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing • Sunscreen • Bug spray • Hat • Hand sanitizer This rain or shine event will take place unless the forecast calls for thunderstorms or very heavy rainfall. We look forward to planting trees with you! Meeting Point: Volunteers will meet at Hermitage Creek Trail, on the south side of the pond. Parking: Parking is available along either side of Raiders Road. Volunteers are asked not to park in the school or provincial lots for the duration of the event. Terrain: Easy, maintained, packed gravel trail. Amenities: Volunteers may use the facilities of nearby businesses on University Ave., as needed. Booking Information: This is a community event. Businesses and corporations must contact us to reserve tickets for their teams.
