About this event

A training series is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Race and Culture.

Full description from organizer

This training series is offered in collaboration with Centre for Race and Culture. Who is it for? As part of the REACH Training initiative, we are delighted to provide this in-person workshop at no cost in partnership with the Centre for Race and Culture, to front-line workers, helping professionals, leadership members, and any community members who aim to take part in supporting Edmonton's community safety. In-Person Workshop: We define micro-inequities as subtle, indirect, and often unintentional practices or behaviours that communicate bias or prejudice against members of marginalized groups, making them feel belittled, excluded, disrespected, or disadvantaged. These discriminatory acts occur across power dynamics, impacting members of marginalized groups such as women, 2SLGBTQ+ folks, people with disabilities, religious minorities, and persons living in poverty. By learning about the interplay between macro- and micro-level inequities, participants will learn why micro-inequities are not small or insignificant, but harmful. Together, we will explore the various forms of micro-inequities and the power dynamics that inform them, along with strategies for recognizing and meaningfully responding to incidents of micro-inequities. At the end, participants will be able to: • Understand what micro-inequities and microaggressions are; • How to recognize and unmask them; • Why and how they are harmful; and, • Strategies for intervening in them (as bystanders, allies and targets) Facilitator Bio: Steven Lin is passionate about empowering youth to achieve their goals through capacity building, self-reflection and soft skill development. Steven has spent the last decade working with various nonprofits to tackle SDG 4 quality education. Some examples include his work with the Alberta Mentorship Program providing high school students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills or working at the Terra Centre to help teen parents advocate for themselves and for policy and system change or the Student Union supporting university students. Location: Centre for Race and Culture Cost: Registration cost is highly subsidized by REACH Edmonton.
