About this event

Award-winning author Carol Off discusses her latest book, True Patriot Love, at KPL.

Full description from organizer

Award-winning author and broadcast journalist Carol Off visits KPL to discuss her latest book, True Patriot Love. In conversation with Deborah Dundas. Since she stepped down from CBC's As It Happens, Carol Off has been on the road talking to Canadians about their country and listening to their questions about its future. In True Patriot Love: Reporting from the Frontlines of Canadian Sovereignty, she weaves these conversations with personal experiences to reveal, as she says, "How I learned to truly, patriotically, love this country." She shows us that through all our efforts - imperfect as they may be - we have forged a nation out of our compassionate, caring, and accommodating impulses, our desire to include and not to exclude, to welcome and encompass rather than reject and demonize. Canadians aren't saintly, she concludes, but we have mostly tried to be decent. And that is a rock worthy of building a national identity upon. --- Presented in partnership with Penguin Random House Canada. Audience Q&A and book signing to follow. Books will be available to purchase onsite from Words Worth Books. About the Author CAROL OFF spent almost sixteen years co-hosting the multi-award-winning CBC radio program, As It Happens. Before that, she covered news and current affairs in Canada and around the world. As a radio correspondent, she reported on politics in Ottawa and Quebec. As a television journalist, she covered the break-up of Yugoslavia; the 9/11 attack on the United States; the election of Vladimir Putin; and politics, conflicts and culture throughout Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Africa. Her first bestselling book, The Lion, The Fox and the Eagle: A Story of Generals and Justice in Yugoslavia and Rwanda, was published in 2000. Since then, she’s written three more award-winning works of narrative non-fiction, including, most recently, All We Leave Behind: A Reporter’s Journey into the Lives of Others, winner of the British Columbia National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction. About the Moderator DEBORAH DUNDAS is a writer and journalist, former television producer, and the current Opinions Editor at the Toronto Star. Her work has appeared in numerous publications in Canada, the UK, and Ireland including Maclean’s, The Globe and Mail, The Belfast Telegraph, and The Sunday Independent.
