From Democracy to Fascism: A Fireside Chat with Professor Klaus E. Meyer

Join the LNC for an engaging discussion exploring lessons for leadership, government, and institutional resilience. How can democratic institutions weaken, and what can today's leaders learn from history to help protect them? The Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management invites you to a fireside chat with Professor Klaus E. Meyer, Professor of International Business at Ivey Business School, on his new book, From Democracy to Fascism: Hitler's German Citizenship. Drawing on the political dynamics of Braunschweig between 1930 and 1933, Meyer's book examines how democratic institutions can be undermined through elite bargaining, institutional compromise, and the gradual accommodation of anti-democratic forces. This timely and thought-provoking conversation will explore what these historical developments can teach us about the risks of normalizing exclusionary politics, the erosion of public trust, and the critical role of political and civic leadership in safeguarding democratic institutions. Pizza and refereshements will be served. About the Speaker Professor Klaus E. Meyer is a leading scholar of international business whose research examines how local institutional contexts shape firms' international strategies.
