A journaling night inspired by Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act: A Way of Being , a book about creativity not as something reserved for artists, but as a way of moving through the world. Rubin explores the idea that creativity begins with attention: noticing what interests us, staying open to ideas, trusting our instincts, and allowing ourselves to follow a thought before knowing where it will lead. You don’t need to have a creative practice or even think of yourself as a creative person to take something from this book. It’s an invitation to become more observant, more curious, and more comfortable with the unknown. During the evening, we’ll unpack some of the book’s central ideas through guided journaling prompts, reflection, and conversation. We’ll explore where our ideas come from, what gets in the way of making things, how perfectionism can affect creativity, and what happens when we give ourselves permission to simply begin. The goal isn’t to leave with a finished piece of work. It’s to leave with new ideas, a clearer sense of what you’re drawn to, and a little more trust in your own creative instincts. Each guest will receive a Soft Studio journal and pen to keep, which we’ll use throughout the evening. No reading required.
