Northern Lights Refuge Fundraising Movie Night: TO WONG FOO,

NLR Presents: "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" (Mayfair Theatre, 1074 Bank Street). Doors Open 6:00pm 🎬 Fundraising Movie Presentation: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) The Vibe: High-glamour, big laughs, and an even bigger heart. The Setup: When elite Manhattan drag queens Vida Bohemme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) tie for "Drag Queen of the Year," they win a trip to Hollywood. Along with their naive protege, Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo), they trade in their plane tickets for a beat-up 1967 Cadillac convertible and hit the open road. The Twist: The car breaks down in Snydersville—a tiny, dreary Midwestern town stuck in a monochromatic rut. Stranded for the weekend, these three fabulous queens decide to do what they do best: stage a total town makeover! Armed with rhinestones, fierce attitudes, and unwavering kindness, they teach the locals how to love themselves, stand up to bullies, and live life in full color. Why It’s Perfect for Our Fundraiser: To Wong Foo is a joyous celebration of community, inclusion, and the magical power of showing up exactly as you are to lift others up. Get ready for incredible fashion, unforgettable one-liners, and a heartwarming reminder that a little bit of sparkle can change a community forever! About our group: Northern Lights Refuge (NLR) is a small group of volunteers in Canada’s Capital whose goal is to sponsor LGBTQ+ individuals who are in life-threatening circumstances and bring them to safety in Canada. We were formed in the spring of 2017 as a result of the efforts of one of our members who mobilized people to help out a gay male in the Middle East after hearing his story. We believe that every human being has the right to live freely, openly and on equal terms. Unfortunately, in some places in the world, doing so can be extremely dangerous, and in some instances, can be life threatening. NLR raises money through various fundraising events and from wonderful supporters near and far. Beyond sponsorship, we provide settlement support following a newcomer's arrival in Canada as they start a new life in a country where they are free to be themselves. To date, we have welcomed 6 newcomers to Ottawa and are currently working on three cases. We are a sponsorship group working in partnership with Capital Rainbow Refuge.
