What to expect from the song circle (6:30-8:30pm): Kate creates welcoming spaces where people can discover the freedom, connection, and joy of singing together. With an intuitive approach, she weaves voices into layered harmony according to what feels most alive and present in herself and in the group. Kate's songs are rooted in the richness of being human and our deep connection with the wild world. They make room for the full spectrum of experience: joy and wonder, grief and longing, playfulness and celebration, tenderness and hope. Her songs have been described as aspirational mantras, uplifting anthems, and prayers for life, light, healing, and renewal. All voices are welcome, no singing experience necessary. Songs will be taught in the oral tradition. Optional Workshop (2:30-4:30pm): Singing with the Seasons - Tuning Outwards and Inwards This experiential workshop is an invitation to slow down, listen, and let the living world become our guide. By tuning into seasonal energies, we can drop deeper into connecting with the medicine of song work. Through sense meditation, improvisational toning, listening practices, and simple songs, we’ll move out of the busy mind and into a more embodied awareness of the rhythms and energies of nature and ourselves. Directing our sensory awareness outwards, we notice the qualities of the world around us — the temperature, light, sounds, textures, movement, and pace of autumn — and allow those sensations to inform our breath, tone, rhythm, and voice. We'll listen for which song spirits might be longing to express. Turning inwards, we feel into what's alive and moving within us as individuals, and if it feels true, embrace autumn’s invitation to release what is ready to fall away through song. No singing experience is necessary — curiosity and a willingness to listen are enough. More about Kate Sutherland: Kate is a prolific song writer who got her start playing classical piano and writing longer-form songs as a solo musician. In her 20s she discovered the community song circle through the Art of Mentoring, a multi-generational deep nature connection gathering. She became enamoured by the way many voices layering and weaving together creates something magical that no one voice can achieve alone. Her creative vision and purpose took a sharp turn as her song-writing evolved into experiential group singing. Most of the songs she writes now are for many voices and cannot exist without community bringing them fully to life. Kate understands that singing together brings joy and connection as well as a sense of belonging, and song vibrations are healing from the inside-out. Their positive impact extends beyond the singers as they ripple out in lingering echoes and waves into the physical world. Kate co-facilitates deep nature connection retreats (Wild Belonging), willow basket and song weaving workshops (Willow Song), and community singing and song writing retreats (Braided River) throughout the year for folks looking to deepen their connection to song and the natural world.
