Editors and the state of communication in Canada

Join us as we discuss how editors are shaping the future of communication across Canada. Editors are at the forefront of these conversations, working across industries to improve the quality of communication. Join us at the Editors Canada networking event where you can mingle with 15+ leading editors about the state of the Canadian editing industry. The event will start with a brief panel where a panel of editors will raise some questions for discussion. Following the panel, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle directly with the panelists and Editors Canada representatives. This in-person workshop is free to attend. However, if you have the means, we invite you to consider a donation to The Word On The Street as a way of helping to keep these arts events accessible for everyone into the future. Location The WOTS workshops are located in room 310 of Metro Hall, accessible through the festival site at David Pecaut Square. Take the elevator to the third floor and follow the signage. Advance registration is required. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the workshop begins, and bring something to write with! About the Editors Genevieve Clovis, of Clovis Editorial, is a speculative fiction editor, author, and writing coach. She specializes in substantive and stylistic editing for indie authors and publishers. Genevieve takes great joy in ensuring her clients' novels are as monstrous and diabolical as intended. When not frolicking in the woods, Genevieve runs a variety of online writers groups and dabbles in the not-so-dark bookbinding arts. Amanda Clarke is a freelance editor specializing in science fiction and fantasy with the occasional dive into other genres and film festival ephemera. She spends most of her time consuming stories, on the page and on the screen. When not immersed in other worlds, she can usually be found at the rink. Jessica de Bruyn is a freelance story editor, writing coach, and writer who works with both trad and self-published authors. She has been an editing consultant at several literary agencies and currently works with 5 Otter Literary. She has also been a board member for both Editors Toronto and Toronto Romance Writers. As a writer, she creates works for theatre, graphic stories, and is working on multiple novels. Moderator Laura Bontje is a freelance editor whose clients include award-winning authors, Big 5 publishers, authors just beginning their writing journeys. When she's not editing other people's children's books, Laura writes her own. Her third picture book, Marian's Big Dig, comes out on October 6 from Groundwood Books, with illustrations by Scot Ritchie. Laura spent two years as managing editor of Editors Canada's national blog, The Editors' Weekly, and was the recipient of the 2025 Lee d'Anjou Volunteer of the Year Award. She lives in London, Ontario.
