In 1997, the borough fought amalgamation but ultimately became part of the new City of Toronto. So what does East York tell us about Toronto? More than 25 years after amalgamation, the question remains: Did East York understand something about local democracy that Toronto has yet to fully appreciate? What has the community gained and what has it lost since amalgamation? And can a city this large preserve the neighbourliness, resilience and local character that make communities like East York feel like home?
