Plotting and Planning Your Novel

Master story structure, build stronger plots, and use the Five Act Structure to plan, develop, and edit your novel with confidence. Understanding the building blocks of narrative is essential if you want to create a powerful and well-paced plot. In this workshop we’ll explore the structural bones of a novel, learning the vital components of a well written story. Discover tools that will help you to plan before you launch into the first draft of a novel, and learn how to use Five Act Structure to identify plotting issues as you edit your book. This workshop is applicable to all writers interested in crafting a novel, and to writers in the process of editing a novel they have already written. By the end of the session, you will have a clearer understanding of classic story structure, and essential tools to assist you in planning and editing your book. This in-person workshop is free to attend. However, if you have the means, we invite you to consider a donation to The Word On The Street as a way of helping to keep these arts events accessible for everyone into the future. Location The WOTS workshops are located in room 310 of Metro Hall, accessible through the festival site at David Pecaut Square. Take the elevator to the third floor and follow the signage. Advance registration is required. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the workshop begins, and bring something to write with!
