Small Things: Place-Based Art Artist Ange Loft leads a deep, creative exploration of Indigenous pottery patterns from the region, and traditional maps from the Treaty Guide for Torontonians. Join the workshop to craft place-based art to explore Indigenous geographies, treaties, and connection to the more-than-human. Linger after over a cup of tea. Ange Loft (Kanien’kehá:ka, from Kahnawà:ke) is an interdisciplinary performing artist. Her works blend arts-based research, voice, wearable sculpture, and Haudenosaunee history, guided by her background in community theatre, community art and Indigenous theatrical creation methodologies. In recognition of her craft, Ange received the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Indigenous Artist Award in 2023. A Treaty Guide for Torontonians is a book that emerged from The Talking Treaties project and draws on years of questions, research, and discussion with Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, treaty historians, Elders, artists, community leaders, and Toronto residents. The book authors, Ange Loft, Victoria Freeman, Martha Stiegman, and Jill Carter came together to explore the agreements "underpinning relationships between our peoples here – as well as the responsibilities that these relationships entail for all Torontonians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous." "We have come to see that there is not just one treaty for this area but layers of treaties and agreements that call on different relationships, obligations, and responsibilities. In this book, we explore each of these layers in depth and in chronological sequence, recognizing that they all have relevance for treaty relations today." Small Things: Tea, Teachings & Being Together is a series of creative workshops led by Indigenous and settler artists presented by Scadding Court Community Centre and Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence with the support of the Toronto Arts Council. Small Things explores the connections and relationships that emerge when people make something together, when communities gather in shared space, when we slow down enough to connect and journey together.
