Previously, he was a lecturer in Brazilian Studies at The University of the West Indies in Barbados and the University of Ghana. He holds a BA in German, Portuguese, and Literature, as well as an MA and a PhD in Linguistics. Apart from several published articles and book chapters, he is the author of Tabom, the Afro-Brazilian Community in Ghana (2009)—the first book on the history of the Afro-Brazilian returnees to Ghana. His current research focuses on Creole languages, specifically the Portuguese origins and influences in Papiamentu, a Caribbean Creole language spoken mainly in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. He compares Papiamentu with Papiá Kristang, a nearly extinct Portuguese Creole spoken by a small community of Portuguese descendants in Malacca, Malaysia. His literary interests also focus on contemporary Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Portuguese authors. He has translated several books and serves as the Chief Examiner for Portuguese for the Caribbean Examinations Council.
