About this event

Explore the universe's most accurate clock — Pulsars. Space Camp Saturday – Monthly Exploration for the Whole Family Join us every last Saturday of the month for Space Camp Saturday, a hands-on boot camp into hot topics in space science. Each month brings a new theme—from space exploration to special relativity—led by special guests from the UBC Department of Physics and Astronomy. Families can enjoy interactive talks, demos, and activities designed to spark curiosity (recommended ages 10+). Space Camp Saturday is FREE FOR MEMBERS! Register here: https://go.spacecentre.ca/Sys2TV September: Pulsars! Space Camp Saturday is back in September with an exciting topic: Pulsars! Join us on Saturday, September 26 from 11:30–3:00PM at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre for an afternoon of discovery. Start things off with a scavenger hunt! Explore the Cosmic Courtyard while guided by the scavenger hunt. Complete it for a pin and certificate! Then, watch our immersive planetarium show - Surfing the Solar System! See the solar system as you’ve never seen it before – leave Earth behind to tour some of the most intriguing destinations in our solar system and find out more about some of the latest discoveries about our neighbouring planets. Narrated live by our Interpreters! Finally, experience our feature talk - How Dead Stars Become The Universe's Most Accurate Clock. When massive stars die, they sometimes collapse into pulsars. Pulsars are ultra-dense blobs of leftover star that can spin hundreds of times per second! Learn how these star remnants form, why they spin so fast, and how scientists use them as the universe's most reliable time-keeping tool. Mira Roddy: Mira is a fourth-year undergraduate student in Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia. She is passionate about science outreach and believes exploring the universe should be accessible and fun for everyone. In the future, she hopes to combine her background in physics and love for public outreach to explore how we can foster a sustainable future for space exploration. Chloe Lawson: Chloe is currently completing the final year of her undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy. In the future Chloe plans to pursue graduate studies in either medical physics or applications of physics in sustainability/climate solutions. Chloe believes in the power of public engagement and curiosity about science and is excited to share her knowledge about science and physics now and in the future! This is your chance to explore the universe's evolution through a fun, family-friendly environment, perfect for budding astronomers and space enthusiasts (recommended ages 10+).
