Steakholder: Negotiating Food Futures

Play the serious game "Steakholder" and experience the trade-offs, negotiations, and competing interests that shape food policy. For students, researchers, policymakers, NGOs, food-system professionals, and anyone interested in food policy, sustainability, agriculture, nutrition, and societal transformation. Food-system transformation involves difficult choices. Efforts to improve environmental sustainability, food security, public health, economic viability, and social acceptance often create trade-offs that require negotiation among diverse actors. Policies play a critical role in shaping these outcomes, yet designing effective and broadly accepted measures remains a major challenge. In this interactive workshop, participants will step into the roles of policymakers and advocacy groups through the serious game Steakholder. Working within a simulated European food system, they will negotiate policies, navigate competing interests, and explore how different decisions affect environmental sustainability, public health, agricultural production, economic outcomes, and animal welfare. By experimenting with different policy options and experiencing the perspectives of various stakeholders, participants will gain first-hand insight into the complexity of food-system governance. The workshop provides a unique opportunity to explore how trade-offs emerge, how consensus is built, and how policy decisions can shape the future of food systems.
