Full description from organizer

What will we learn? For this special Winter edition of Søndagsskolen we will learn about mending clothes with our hands. By working with our own knitted garments we will explore how simple stitches can make a mend. During the afternoon we will look at when and how something can be mended, and how 3 key components; a needle, a thread, and a little patience can give clothing new life. We will try to understand mending as something more than a way to fix what is worn or damaged – and rather as a way of caring for what we already have, and trying to enhance its value. With the guidance of Ida Gry, the woman behind Sting Service we will practice mending. Please bring along something knitted: A well worn woollen sweater or a special pair of socks. You will have the chance to stitch on a practice cloth first, to see and feel what the stitches can do, before moving on to your own garment. A selection of soft yarns, materials and tools will be available to use during the workshop. Ida Gry will also share glimpses of her practice to open up a conversation about when and why we choose to mend, and what happens when we take the needle into our own hands. She will also share knowledge of materials and mending techniques, as well as the cultural history of repair across time and continents. Who will we learn from? Ida Gry Jensen is a trained textile designer. During her studies she seeked a way of working with textiles without necessarily producing something new. It was during that process she discovered mending. Later she studied the culture of clothing in the early 1900 in which repairs were a natural part of a garment’s life. This led to the creation of Sting Service – a business centred around the repair of clothing and textiles, with the ambition of bringing a culture of reduce, reuse and repair, and the long forgotten traditional handcraft into a contemporary context. Today, Sting Service is both a repair service and a workshop format, where Ida Gry teaches others how to mend their own clothes. By the end of the day… You will take home a small guide to help you continue mending at home, along with the very tangible memory in the form of your mended garment, whether half way done, finished or just begun. Hopefully you will also leave feeling that you have gained enough familiarity with the stitches to be confident using them yourself – so that the next time you discover a hole in your clothes, you feel inspired to pick up your needle and get started, one stitch at a time. A needle and thread are included in the ticket price. Søndagsskolen is a recurring informal school at Alle Tiders . Every month we invite a talented artist, farmer, chef, communicator or craftsperson to teach us something new about the world around us. Søndagsskolen is created and curated in collaboration with visual artist Mia Carl . Everyone is welcome.
