Full description from organizer

Abigail Lazkoz Lamb, half cat, almost a dog From 21 October 2026 to 17 January 2027 Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao - Exhibition Hall On 21 October, Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, the Bilbao City Council’s Centre for Society and Contemporary Culture, will open *Cordero, mitad gato, casi perro* by Abigail Lazkoz (Bilbao, 1972), one of the most renowned Spanish artists of her generation in the field of expanded drawing in dialogue with painting, sculpture and architecture. Her practice addresses issues relating to identity, memory, symbolic violence, the architecture of power and the tensions between the individual and the collective, often through large-scale black-and-white mural installations that combine references to comics, popular culture and recent political history. Curated by Yara Sonseca, the project features expanded works, created by revisiting and reorganising existing pieces and combining them with new or previously unseen works. Co-produced with DA2 Domus Artium 2002, the exhibition reformulates and expands the project launched in 2025 in Salamanca with *Tengo un animal singular*.In its first iteration, the exhibition’s title was taken from the opening words of *Una cruza*, a short story written by Franz Kafka in 1917. In the story, the singular animal is described as a fantastical creature, half lamb, half cat. In the same way, Lazkoz made the concept of hybridisation or blending the central theme of the aesthetic syntheses on display in the galleries of DA2. In the exhibition at Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, Lazkoz proposes to take the story further by undertaking an exercise in engaging with otherness within his own practice—not with the intention of presenting it as a single, amalgamated and fluid whole, but to champion the value of its complex nature through the acceptance, as in Kafka’s story, of the languor and tender perplexity that comes with being a ‘cruza’. About Abigail Lazkoz Abigail Lazkoz (Bilbao, 1972) holds a degree in Fine Art from the University of the Basque Country (EHU), where she is also pursuing her PhD and works as a lecturer. One of her first key sources of support was the BilbaoArte Fundazioa Foundation (1999–2000), an arts production centre run by Bilbao City Council, which awarded her a production grant and studio space at an early stage, facilitating the development of her expanded drawing language. This was complemented by support from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, through grants such as Ertibil and the Ertibil Prize for Visual Arts (2005), as well as the Gure Artea award (2006) from the Basque Government, one of the region’s most prestigious prizes for contemporary art. He has spent a significant part of his international career between New York and Europe, exhibiting at some of the most prominent institutions in the field of national and international contemporary art. Among his most notable projects are his participation in ‘Greater New York’ at MoMA PS1 (New York), exhibitions at The Drawing Centre and the Queens Museum, as well as solo exhibitions at the Fundació Joan Miró, the MARCO in Vigo, the ABC Museum and the CAB in Burgos. Her work forms part of major public collections, including those of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; the Artium Museoa collection; the collections of the Queens Museum and the MoMA PS1 institutional complex; as well as collections linked to MUSAC, BilbaoArte and other Spanish public institutions. Lazkoz is represented by the Marzana Gallery in Bilbao. About Yara Sonseca Yara Sonseca Mas (Madrid, 1977) is an independent curator and art historian based in Munich. With a degree in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid, she has built a career focused on international contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on solo exhibitions, institutional programmes and curatorial research projects.
