The Women in Machine Learning & Data Science (WiMLDS) group aims to inspire, educate, regardless of gender, and support women and gender minorities in the field. All genders may attend our meetups. This talk introduces causal machine learning for estimating the effect of an intervention from observational, retrospective data. Explainable AI gives the impression that we can identify which variables to tweak to obtain a desired outcome, but there is more to it. I will review how study design, epidemiological principles, and flexible machine-learning models can be combined to estimate more credible causal effects.
