Join us on 26 September for a private tour at Perrotin Paris, exploring Emma Prempeh’s debut solo exhibition at the gallery, The Domain of the Stranger, curated by Brice Arsène Yonkeu. Drawing on her Vincentian and Ghanaian heritage and her upbringing in London, Prempeh brings together Ghana, Saint Vincent and London in a new body of paintings exploring belonging, inheritance, memory and the idea of home. Through imagined landscapes, family histories and places that exist across continents, Prempeh creates a space where different geographies, memories and generations can overlap. What’s included: 🖼 Private viewing of The Domain of the Stranger💬 Conversation around belonging, memory and diaspora🎨 Insights into Emma Prempeh’s artistic practice and the exhibition About the Exhibition 🖼️ Emma Prempeh, The Domain of the Stranger At the heart of the exhibition is Prempeh’s return to her relationship with her father, a subject she had previously approached but set aside because it was emotionally difficult. In works including Is this Legacy? and Split, her father appears alongside images of an unfinished house in Obuasi, Ghana. The house, which has taken twenty years to become what it was intended to be, becomes more than a physical structure. It becomes a metaphor for inheritance, family, memory and relationships that remain unfinished. For the first time, the British landscape of Prempeh’s childhood enters her paintings directly. Ghana, Saint Vincent and London are brought together rather than treated as separate places, reflecting the experience of growing up between different histories, cultures and ideas of home. My take on the exhibition, by Art Gallivant: What I find particularly moving about Prempeh’s work is the way she brings different places and generations into the same image. There is something incredibly special and daring about holding together one lineage while also acknowledging everything that sits around it: home and displacement, inheritance and absence, memory and imagination. I think this intimate merging of worlds will feel familiar to many people. It speaks to the experience of carrying different places, histories and versions of home within you.
