Safe Use of Sharp Tools Course

Learn how to use a selection of sharp tools including Axes, Knives and Saws Safe Use of Sharp Tools – Bushcraft EssentialsLearn to use bushcraft knives, axes and saws safely and confidently in this practical, hands-on course. Whether you're new to bushcraft or want to improve your skills, this session provides the knowledge and techniques needed to work safely with edged tools in the outdoors. Throughout the course you'll be guided through the safe handling, carrying, maintenance and practical use of the three essential bushcraft tools. You'll learn how to select the right tool for the job, work efficiently and reduce the risk of injury while protecting both yourself and the woodland environment. During the course you will cover: • Bushcraft knife safety and safe handling • Correct grip, cutting techniques and safe working positions • Safe use of folding and fixed-blade knives • Axe safety, handling and splitting techniques • Safe use of folding and bow saws • Establishing safe working areas and maintaining safe distances • Tool care, sharpening and routine maintenance • Choosing the correct tool for different woodland tasks • Basic UK law relating to carrying and using knives and other edged tools • Good woodland practice and Leave No Trace principles By the end of the course you will have the confidence to use bushcraft tools safely, understand their limitations, and appreciate the importance of responsible tool use in the outdoors. The course is led by Chris Tyrrell, an Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Bushcraft Competency Certificate holder with recognised outdoor first aid training and public liability insurance. Training is delivered in a relaxed, supportive environment with safety as the highest priority. Duration: Half day (approximately 3–4 hours) or full day, depending on the course format. Ability: Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. Equipment: Bushcraft tools can be provided, or you are welcome to bring your own suitable equipment for inspection and use. What Happens After You Book? Once you’ve booked your place, we’ll send you everything you need to get ready for your day in the woods. This will include a simple kit and clothing list, where to park, your meeting point and arrival details, plus a short attendee information form to complete before the course. Don’t worry if you’re new to bushcraft or don’t have lots of specialist kit — we’ll let you know exactly what you need to bring. The aim is to make everything as straightforward as possible so you can turn up, enjoy the woodland and get stuck into learning some great bushcraft skills.
