Fungi After Dark: A Biofluorescent Night Walk

Join us after dark to discover the hidden, glowing world of biofluorescent fungi! As part of Secret Fungi Festival 2026, join us for a nighttime wander through Carey’s Secret Garden to explore the spectacular world of fungal biofluorescence. We’ll begin with introductions and a warming medicinal mushroom tea before heading into the forest to discover a stranger side of the natural world. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, the familiar transforms. Fungi, lichens, slugs and snails reveal unexpected colours and patterns, illuminating a vibrant, dynamic world that lies beyond the reach of our everyday vision. Moving slowly through the darkness, we’ll follow whatever glows, fluoresces or catches our curiosity, exploring the ecology, science, art, culture and mythology of the organisms we encounter. Along the way, we’ll identify our finds, discover how biofluorescence works, and consider what else might be hiding in plain sight. We’ll finish with an opportunity to experiment with UV-reactive dye made from mushrooms. No specialist knowledge needed, just curiosity, warm clothes and a willingness to spend an autumn evening exploring the woodland after dark. Please note: This is an observational walk, not a foraging event. Children are welcome, provided they are accompanied by an adult. Every attendee, including children, needs their own ticket. UV torches will be provided with some available to buy. You're welcome to bring your own; a 365nm UV torch is ideal.
