“The Cathedral stands alone in a wilderness of desolation”: the bombing of Canterbury in 1942. Julian Waltho, leading local historian, discusses the tragic events of 84 years ago are slipping away from living memory, so it's more important than ever to remember and reassess the Baedeker Raids of June 1942 as well as the daylight raid in October of the same year. Using material from the Cathedral Archives, the National Archives, the Air Ministry and eyewitness accounts, this talk retells the story of the raids and their aftermath, placing them in the context of the bombing war of 1939—45. Cash bar and festive nibbles before and after the talk.
