Young Artists Studio is a weekly after school art club at Stephanie Fuller Gallery in Deal, led by professional artist Stephanie Fuller. The emphasis is on imagination and independent creativity. Rather than everyone making the same thing each week, young artists are encouraged to develop their own ideas and projects. One child might be painting, another drawing, while someone else is building a sculpture in clay. I work with each student individually, helping them discover the materials and techniques they need to take an idea from their imagination and turn it into something real. They can explore painting, drawing, sculpture, clay and mixed media, learning about colour, form, composition and materials along the way. The studio itself is an important part of the experience. Classes take place in a working artist’s studio and gallery, surrounded by paintings, drawings and sculptures, with access to the materials and tools of an artist’s working environment. The aim is not simply to teach children how to make a particular picture. It is to give them some experience of what it is actually like to think and work as an artist: having an idea, experimenting, changing their mind, solving problems and gradually developing their own creative voice. New students are very welcome, as are young artists returning after some time away.
