This module introduces students to working with a variety straw materials to create a beautiful hat perfect for the summer weather. Ideal for anyone wishing to make stylish casual sun hat or elegant occasion/event headwear using natural straw. You’ll learn a variety of essential techniques, including: • Blocking Straw: Learn to shape and block straw hoods or capelines into a variety of classic summer hat styles. • Working with Different Straw Materials: Understand the characteristics of parasisal, buntal, raffia and other millinery straws. • Brim Shaping and Edge Finishing: Create smooth curves, rolled edges and balanced proportions. • Wiring and Structural Support: Adding stability while maintaining a lightweight finish. • Trimming Techniques: Decorate hats using ribbons, braids, straw trims or simple feather details. • Professional Finishing Each week will feature a new demonstration on specialised techniques, offering you the chance to build on your skills progressively. To maximise your time in class, students are encouraged to complete some hand-stitching at home, allowing for more focused instruction and experimentation during each session. There is no limit to the number of hats you can create, so you can let your creativity flow! There’s no limit to the number of hats you can create, but you will definitely leave with a hat that comprises a crown and a brim.
