A specialist tour of Kellie Castle focusing on the furniture designs of Sir Robert Lorimer This specialist tour will seek to highlight the important pieces of Sir Robert Lorimer designed furniture in Kellie Castle. While there will be mention of other firms with whom Lorimer worked, the emphasis will be on exploring the relationships built by Sir Robert with two furniture makers, namely Whytock and Reid in Edinburgh, and Wheelers of Arncroach. Through a collaborative approach with these two firms, Sir Robert was able to secure the production of extremely high quality furniture to supply to his architectural clients and to his own family members. Several of the pieces in Kellie Castle were, indeed, made for particular family members and this tour will focus on the background stories behind their creation. Other pieces of furniture displayed around the Castle which were made for clients, rather than than direct family, will also be examined. A key common factor being the stress which Sir Robert put on the use of local materials and craftsmen. Please note this tour involves climbing flights of turnpike staircases to move around the Castle.
