Walking with Cameras around Yarner Wood

This photo-walk will provide participants with the opportunity to explore and photograph the beautiful Yarner Wood and walk around in nature Walking with Cameras at Yarner Wood in the Autumn Join us on Thursday 5th November for an autumn photo-walk around the beautiful Yarner Wood, which is part of the East Dartmoor Woods and Heaths National Nature Reserve. This photowalk will provide participants with the opportunity to photograph the wildlife, explore the different habitats, enjoy the beautiful surrounding and immerse yourself in nature. Also, there are many types of tree grow in Yarner Wood including oak, birch, scots pine, larch and beech. It is also home to buzzards, sparrow hawks, nightjars and pied flycatchers. This Photo-walk will take place on Thursday 5th November and it will begin at 11:00am with limited minibus transport from Exeter, which will leave at 10:20am from South Street, Exeter (stop outside the Newham convenience store). This photo-walk will include a guides from Natural England, who is on hand to explain the different habitats and answer any of your wildlife questions. The starting point for this photo-walk will be at the car at the NNR Office. Header Image © Jill Ashby, Kathy Mead, Jo Bird & Paula Hyland MORE ABOUT YARNER WOOD Yarner Wood NNR takes in 365 hectares of woods and heathland - including Trendlebere Down, which was destroyed by fire in 1997 but has since recovered well. The wood features mainly mixed hardwoods, like sessile oak, beech, alder, hazel and wych elm. It is rich in lichen, and is home to birds such as pied flycatcher, redstart, wood warbler and nightjar. Yarner is ancient woodland, dating back many centuries. It was acquired by the Nature Conservancy, and in 1952 it became one of the first six places in England to be declared a NNR. Then, a woodland management programme was started, with the aim of turning the neglected woodland into a vigorous and diverse one. These days, it is managed by English Nature and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as well as a NNR. From 1857 to 1862, a copper mine operated in Yarner Wood and extracted ore which gave over 2000 tonnes of copper. WALKING WITH CAMERAS Walking with Cameras is a two-year project that will provide over 40 innovative photo-walks for people in Exeter and the surrounding regions. This photo-walks programme will provide an alternative means of social interaction, healthy activity, creative engagement, and it will provide participants with the opportunity to visit and photograph a range of inspiring locations for 3-4 hours, where they can create their own images or take part in a photographic tasks. The locations in this project will be varied, but will include forests and woodlands, wetlands, local urban areas, country parks, country houses and local historical landmarks. This project is open to all adult communities across the City of Exeter and Devon, with a special focus for people who have experienced or are currently experiencing mental health issue, for those in the community who are experiencing social isolation and for people who are affected by a disability or are using a wheelchair. This project has been funded by The National Lottery Awards for All England Programme and it will enable participants to create their own photo-story, build a portfolio of images and take part in a fun and creative activity.
