Connecting Moments: Casting a Landscape

Spend a morning with artist Morag Smith exploring a landscape that has meaning for you, then transform your discoveries into a cast piece. Spend a morning with artist Morag Smith exploring a landscape that has meaning for you, then transform your discoveries into a cast piece. We will begin by exploring our landscapes using a variety of methods which may include vision boards, short written exercises exploring our senses, or creating a collage. These exercises are designed to draw out what we notice about our chosen landscape, be it colour, shape, plants, people or memories. We will then use these discoveries to cast a landscape using plumbing pipes as our moulds, filled with plaster of Paris. Colour and texture can be added via pigments, paints and a variety of objects, such as stones, shells, plants and beads. There is always an element of surprise built into the process as we never know exactly how our cast will turn out until it's set and released from the mould. Part of the joy of this technique is letting go of control and embracing whatever emerges. By the end of the session, we will each have a small collection of cast pieces. Tactile, personal fragments of the landscapes we carry with us.
