A Portrait Painting Workshop

Complete a single, drawn or painted portrait from a clothed life model with feedback from an experienced tutor. For this one-off portrait workshop, students can choose either to paint or draw from a clothed life model, who will hold a single pose. We will paint from 10 – 1 pm, have an hour’s lunch break, then reconvene and paint again from 2 - 4 pm. This is an introductory lesson in how to use oil paint. The paint and other equipment are provided, so there is no need to bring anything to class. It is a tutored workshop and there will be a little demonstration to begin with, making the process of painting in oils fun and easy for those using the medium for the first time. People imagine oil paint to be complicated, but it can be made a simple and intuitive process, painting the picture in one layer of paint. The medium allows us to blend colours over time, and to produce delicate skin tones and soft transitions of colour. With longer poses like this, students will have the chance to observe the model in great detail and produce a richly-shaded, volumetric rendering of the form. This is also an opportunity to get tutored feedback on your figure drawing/painting, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced artist. It is always a warm and encouraging atmosphere, catering to a wide range of students. All artist-quality materials are included in the price of the classes. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided (Lunch not included). Location: 37 Queen Street, Colchester, CO1 2PQ Tutor: Sam Gimson
