Farming Roadmap 2050 - Diversification: Commercial and Land use

On June 24th 2026, the government released it's 25-year plan for the future of farming in England. This document was designed to give farmers greater certainty and clarity about the direction of government policy, and where farmers should look to invest monies and efforts. The government's vision for English farming is to be food producing and commercially viable, while becoming more environmentally sustainable for the changes that climate changes brings. The plan is built around four overarching priorities: Profitability, Productivity, Sustainability, and Resilience. Across this series of farm visits and farm walks, we will visit farms who are demonstrating one or multiple aspects of this plan. On this walk, we're visiting a farm which is demonstrating diversification; both in terms of commercial opportunities, and land use change, including agroforestry. Our Hosts - Wakelyns Wakelyns is a 23-hectare organic agroforestry site in Suffolk farmed by David and Amanda Wolfe, it's one of the oldest and most diverse of its kind in the UK, first planted in 1994. Rows of fruit and nut trees, timber and coppiced willow and hazel are grown in alleys alongside an organic arable rotation, combining food, fuel and craft materials from the same land. Alongside this, Wakelyns generates income through "enterprise stacking," hosting a number of independent small businesses on site, each making use of the land, buildings or produce in a different way. Further diversification comes through farm stays and NGO retreats, a regular programme of courses and events, and on-site research and plant breeding.
