Film screening: ARCADIA (2017)

Run time: 78 minutes. Join us for a screening of Paul Wright's provocative and poetic visual odyssey ARCADIA (2017), an experimental documentary exploring Britain's complex and evolving connection to its land and culture. Drawing on inspiration from The Wicker Man to Winstanley, Wright fuses 100 years of carefully selected unseen footage from the BFI National Archive with psychedelic scores by Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp). A folk horror wrapped in an archive film, the visual essay follows an unnamed protagonist from the future as she travels through four metaphorical 'seasons' to take us on a visceral sensory journey to explore the beauty, eccentricity, brutality, and magic of our relationship to the land and each other. '...a bucolic picture-postcard image of Blighty beneath which Wright unearths a history of classism, racism, dancing, hunting, industrialisation and exotic pagan weirdness. It's a headily intoxicating affair, conjuring a portrait of Britain that is sometimes nostalgic, sometimes nightmarish.' - Mark Kermode This screening has been supported by Cinema for All's Launch programme, with support from BFI / National Lottery funds.
