About this event
Week 4: A cosy family woodland session exploring playful reset tools and gentle routines that help busy bodies feel safe and steady. When feelings become big, busy or overwhelming, trying to talk or reason our way through them often doesn’t work. First, we need to help the body feel safe. ❤️🔥 Hearth Habits is the fourth session in our six-week Lantern Keepers autumn journey from the Mojo Woodland Wellbeing Club.

During this cosy, family-focused woodland session, children and their grown-ups will explore simple movement, breathing and grounding activities that can help the nervous system move from overwhelm towards calm. Together, we’ll create a collection of playful “reset tools” that families can use during difficult transitions, after busy days or whenever emotions feel a little stormy. What will we be exploring? Our main theme for Week 4 is the Red Droplet, which helps children understand big feelings and discover safe ways to calm and regulate their bodies. A reset is not a punishment, a time-out or a demand to stop feeling. It is a kind pause that says: “Your body is having a difficult moment. Let’s help it feel safe before we try to solve the problem.” Through play and gentle repetition, we’ll explore how predictable routines can make transitions feel safer and more manageable. Our key messages for the session will be: “A reset is a kind pause—not a punishment.” “First calm the body, then we can solve the problem.” What will we be doing? Families will settle around our cosy woodland basecamp before practising the four Red Reset Steps: • Stop—pause the body • Breathe—take three slow breaths • Squeeze—use a hand squeeze, self-hug or safe object • Choose—try one helpful reset tool We’ll remind children that they don’t have to choose the perfect tool. They can try one, notice how it feels and choose another if they need to. Take the Move Your Mood Quest Families will explore the woodland and complete a series of playful reset missions together. These may include: • Ten giant stomps • Shaking arms and legs like a wet dog • A safe tree-hug squeeze • Three slow “hot cocoa” breaths • A noticing walk to find different colours or shapes • Saying one kind or encouraging thing to themselves These activities help children learn that movement, breathing, connection and sensory awareness can all change how the body feels. They are simple enough to use at home without needing special equipment or a complicated routine. Create your own Move Your Mood Spinner Each child will create and decorate a Move Your Mood Spinner to take home. The spinner will include the same reset activities practised in the woodland, allowing children to choose a tool when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, restless or stuck. They can spin, try the suggested reset and then notice: “Does my body feel different?” If the first tool doesn’t help, they can spin again or choose something else. The aim isn’t to force a child to become calm. It’s to build their awareness of what their body needs and give them more than one safe way to respond. There will also be refreshments and food together around the fire, child-led woodland exploration and relaxed time for families to connect. A session for children and grown-ups together This is not a children-only activity. Our woodland sessions are designed for children and their parents or carers to experience together. Grown-ups will explore how co-regulation, predictable language and calm repetition can support children through transitions and emotionally intense moments. We’ll also gently reframe what can sometimes be labelled as “bad behaviour.” A meltdown or outburst may be a sign that a child’s nervous system has become overwhelmed. Calming the body first can make it much easier to communicate, reconnect and work out what needs to happen next. A helpful script to use at home might be: “I can see this feels really big. Let’s help your body first, and then we’ll work it out together.” Your home micro-mission After the session, families will be invited to create a simple ten-minute reset routine and try it three times during the week. This could be used after school, after an outing, before bedtime or during another transition that regularly feels difficult. It might include: • A drink and something to eat • Ten minutes without questions • Movement or shaking • A cuddle, squeeze or quiet space • Three slow breaths • One familiar next step The routine doesn’t need to be perfect. Predictability and connection are what make it helpful.
