Candle-Lit Tour

Van Gogh House by candlelight! “It often seems to me that the night is even more richly coloured than the day” Letter from Vincent van Gogh to his sister Willemien, 14th September 1888. Vincent Van Gogh lived at 87 Hackford Road in 1873-74, when Londoners lived by candle light and oil lamps, and streets were lit by gas. 15 years later, Brixton’s famed ‘Electric Avenue’ became the first street in Britain to be lit by electric light. This November, join us for a specially curated candle-lit tour, exploring the history of domestic lighting in London, alongside Van Gogh’s interest in light, colour and the potential of darkness. This tour includes a festive glass of mulled wine or apple juice, a nod to Van Gogh’s particular enthusiasm for the Christmas traditions he encountered in Victorian England.
