Grafted-on

In horticulture, the practice of grafting inserts a cutting from one plant into the stem or root of another, leading them to grow together as a single organism. The word comes from the Greek -graphein, meaning to write or draw. grafted-on brings together drawings and installations shaped by flows of distant rivers, forests, deserts and oceans, in an inner-city London garden. Made using graphite, ink and steel, the collected large-scale works expose traces of wild, elemental and industrial processes, revealing local connections and tensions between distant planetary forces, ecological systems and human relationships. The exhibition is set within the gardens and greenhouses of Cultivate Colindale. This unique community garden is home to thousands of rescued plant species from across the globe, and to rehabilitated clay and reclaimed materials from across London. Together, the garden and exhibition ask us to question how we can forge connections across remote geographies, peoples and species. Join us for garden drinks and conversation at our exhibition opening on Saturday 14.11 from 11am (registration here). A creative workshop (ticket link here) will explore the garden and garden-processes through embodied drawing, writing and language on Sunday 22.11 at 11am. The exhibition is open Tues-Sat 10am-4pm. The exhibition is hosted and curated by Cultivate Colindale, and runs alongside the Light and Flight Festival, a weekend of art, music, performance, heritage and collective fun, created with and for the people of Barnet.
