Across the Generations: 90 Years of the Care System

Join Foundling Hospital pupil John Caldicott and care experienced storyteller and theatre-maker Isabelle Kirkham for an in-conversation. How has the children’s care system in this country changed over the last 90 years? From the institutional care of organisations like the Foundling Hospital to a move to ‘family-centred’ care in the 1950s and the rise of long-term foster placements, the experiences of a child in care have been very different across the generations – but some things have very much stayed the same. John Caldicott’s mother Daisy brought him to the Foundling Hospital in 1936, 90 years ago to the day of this event. Using photos and memories of her in later life, John will begin by telling her story. We’ll then hear about John’s experience of life growing up at the Foundling Hospital and what lay beyond, in conversation with Isabelle who will bring insights from her own experiences of the care system in the 21st century. The talk will be followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions. This event will last around 90 minutes. Doors will open half an hour before the event starts.
