Full description from organizerShow less
A free screening of new Oscar-shortlisted documentary about indigenous resistance in the Amazon. In this love story and urgent call to action, an Indigenous couple risk everything to defend the Amazon and their unborn child’s future. Join us for a free community screening of new film Yanuni (2025) which is Oscar-shortlisted, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, and screened at Sheffield Doc Festival last year. Film's run time is 112 minutes and a short discussion about the themes of land rights and indigenous resistance will follow the film. Doors open 6:00, film starts at 6:30. Tea and biscuits provided you are welcome to bring your own food and drink to our venue. Tickets are free but donations are gratefully accepted to cover the venue and film costs. YANUNI follows the extraordinary journey of Juma Xipaia, an Indigenous chief from the Brazilian Amazon, as she rises from a remote village in Xipaya territory to the political frontlines of climate justice. Spanning years of activism and personal sacrifice, the film captures Juma’s historic appointment as Brazil’s first Secretary of Indigenous Rights under President Lula. Navigating impending motherhood, rising political responsibility, and her husband Hugo’s high-risk missions, she is forced to confront the personal cost of resistance. At once epic and intimate, YANUNI is a powerful portrait of resilience, Indigenous sovereignty, and the fight to protect the world’s largest rainforest—for future generations and the planet we call home.
